Lessons, Rentals, Trunkin’ it.

June 29th, 2010

Hello Surf Montreal!

As the weather warms up, the water warms up and we can start to trunk it soon!  That’s right, while surfers in Maine, Long Island, even northern California are still putting on their wetsuits… Were surfing in shorts.

So you want to surf?  Where to rent a board?  Where to take a lesson?

Check out the following sites for Lessons and Rentals.  Both great options, but 2 Imagine is closest to the Habitat 67 wave.

See you at the wave!

Summer time!

June 21st, 2010

Hey Guys the summer is here and it is hot!  Here are a few tips to make the summer surf sessions more enjoyable!

-Surf with a buddy.  You never know if you fall wrong or your board hits you weird,  the currents and rapids are unforgiving if you are injured.

-Surf smart.  Don’t swim in if someone’s killing it and having a good time just because they have been on the wave for 2 minutes and 5 seconds.  Wait till they wave you in.

-Take 2 minutes max if it’s busy then next!

-Don’t swim in on someone unless you are waved in.

-Leave your valuables at home! Thefts occur on the river bank.

-Don’t leave bags in the windows of your car.  You may have noticed the broken glass on the ground.

-Have fun!  Localism is for a point break on the north shore.

-Help other surfers and if they are struggling give them a few tips!

Cheers!

Oil Slick

June 8th, 2010

Hello Surf Montreal!

Lately I have been thinking a lot about the oil spill and how it may affect some of the east coasts prime surfing locations.   Reports constantly talk about how southern winds may push the oil into the gulf stream and up along Florida, through to North Carolina and then out to sea.  I can’t help but think of the many prime surf spots that are going to be devastated by the tar like oil washing ashore.  Well as there is nothing to do but hope it doesn’t follow the gulf stream let all pray to the surf gods that the oil stays in the northern gulf and doesn’t expand it’s deadly reach!

Habitat 67 despite the low water levels!

May 31st, 2010

Hello all!

Just went to check out the Habitat 67 wave.  It looks ok.   For people asking about right sides… they are non existent, but the main wave looks alright.  It’s not as big as usual but it did have a nice green face with periodic white patches.  You can certainly catch it swimming and once it greens up it looks awesome!

Enjoy.

Oceanside

May 23rd, 2010

Been kicking it in Oceanside, Ca the last few days surfing consistent chest to head high waves at the Oceanside Pier, Breakwater, and Brooks st in Laguna Beach.  I have had some of the best rides of my life, surfed the biggest waves of my life and have just been having an amazing time.  Met great people, great surfers and have added another top notch surf shop to my list of great surf shops to visit when surfing in… In Oceanside there’s this shop called Real Surf.  I was attracted to the shop because it didn’t look as corporate or expensive as the others.  I figured I could probably walk in and rent a decent board at a decent price instead of an 8 foot foamie for 30$.  I was right.  I was also surprised when me and Shawn Ambrose started talking and he is an ex-pat from Newfoundland.  He has hockey games on his shop tv and he has all the stoke in the world.  He has been shaping boards for 20 years and has a great shop going.  If you are in the Oceanside area rent your stuff at Real Surf at 1101 s Pacific Coast highway… check them out at http://www.realsurfshop.com/.  There is also the California Surf Museum.  Nice place to go between sessions and they have a great collection of surfboards from the giant woodies through their evolution.

Now check out this quick clip from Oceanside Pier… Basically I surfed it on days that were 3-5 feet which seems like everyday… Today it was about 7 feet or so.

Enjoy this quick clip!

San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Oceanside.

May 17th, 2010

Hello Surf Montreal!

All I have to say is that if you haven’t been to California GO!!!!  San Francisco as a city is amazing… As a surf destination it’s ok.  Fort Point is really cool looking but the takeoff is beside a big rock then you ride between 2 other rocks.  Needless to say it’s a little dangerous.  I didn’t surf there because the tides were wrong but even if it there was good waves and the right tides I think I would have crashed into the rocks and died.  If you want to surf in SF go to the beaches on the south west side of the golden gate bridge in the Balboa park region north west of the Golden Gate park.  Awesome slow peeling beach breaks.  I couldn’t jump in due to time restraints but man I wish I would have!

Santa Cruz.  Surf City USA.  Steamer Lane is really impressive.  The waves were 2-3 feet everywhere around but in Steamer Lane the wave hits the cliff, jacks up a feet feet higher and goes.  Experts only and even then that cliff looks dangerous.  You have to take a look at steamer lane.  This is where the Santa Cruz crew hangs out and surfs the epic wave.

Oceanside!  Finally a wave I can surf.  Actually many many waves that I can surf.  The pier wave looks nice and is!  Both north and south of the pier there are many sweet beach breaks.  I had some of the best rides of my life.  Just found an empty peak and went.  Paddled out and went to town!  A slow peeling right as already made my week.  Basically a nice early takeoff, stand up take a bottom turn and instead of heading down the line I see that the wave is not curling over but still building… Ride the face, hit the lip and ride it out.  I’m not a pro and certainly don’t pretend to be, but god damn that ride was awesome.  Certainly a spin off of the river.  Where many people would hesitate to take the turn or lose their balance and slide off… The practice in  river waves that are made for carving really made this easy.

Well off the bike the boardwalk area.  More surf this evening or tomorrow!
